How To Overclock : Intel Core i7-920

This is a tutorial which will show you how to overclock your Intel Core i7-920 processor. This will make your PC run up to 11% faster and makes your PC highly efficient

What is Overclocking?

Overcolcking is the practice which increase the frequency in which PC components operate which results in increasing their performance. A few years back the method of overclocking was kept as a sole preserve of those with highly specialised knowledge. But its actually very easy to do. This step by step guide will show you how to boost your PC capabilities to the maximum

 Materials Required(hardwares similar to these capabilities can also get the work done)

·         Triple-channel DDR3 RAM- To push the maximum out of your CPU, you need a high frequency memory. A1,600 MHz kit will be superior for overclocking
·         Asus P6TD Deluxe Motherboard
·         A good cooler- We need to keep our ov
erclocking processor cool, good coolers are a bit large and more quite, the work wont get done with a cooler with intel label on it. You should have a powerful cooling system

Before The Operation

Before you start this process, u should check whether your PC is running smoothly. U can use CoreTemp(link) to check the CPU’s temperature. Along with that run the smallfft test of Prime95(link) to stress all 8-CPU. If CoreTemp shows that your CPU is running at 70 degrees or more, your CPU cooler is either inadequate for this process or may be its not fixed correctly.
For the next step you need a software called CPU-Z u can download it from here. This is a special tool which determines your CPU memory and motherboard. Note the maximum frequency which your memory is capable of, in the mean time you can search your motherboards manufacturer’s website to check if there is a new BIOS available for your motherboard, this will offer better stability

Before you start this, it might be better if u backup your data and note the current level of your pc

Now Let Us Start:

  1. Goto Al Overclock Tuner in the Al Tweaker menu and change it from auto to manual . This will allow you to manually configure the bus speeds for the overclocking
  2. The Asus P6TD Deluxe has a feature called nifty automatic overclocking which will try to raise CPU multiplier from 20x-01x. This will affect your process of overclocking. So as to prevent it from interfering ,we need to force the cpu multiplier to 20x in the ‘CPU Ratio Setting’
  3. The next step is a little bit tricky, in this step we should increase the QPI frequency which is referred as ‘BCLK Frequency’ in Asus motherboards,from its default value of 133MHz. Our target CPU Frequency of 3.8Ghz, you need to enter a value of 190.  (note:CPU frequency= QPIx CPU multiplier)
  4. Now, our memory is set to run faster than the speed which is capable of so we should adjust its frequency. Find the ‘DRAM Frequency’ and set the frequency closesr to the maximum speed of your RAM, make sure that it is not set to the maximum frequency in which it is capable of running.
  5. And now all the frequencies are set for the process of overclock, but as to make it stable, you also need have to vervolt some areas of your system. So as to do this First, type 1.275V into the ‘CPU Voltage’,then 1.9V into the ‘CPU PPL Voltage’. However you should be aware that some CPUs may require a little more vcore to run stably at 3.8GHz, we I don’t recommend going beyond 1.4V unless you have a very good CPU cooling system.
  6. Most of the triple-channel DDR3 memory needs around 1.65V to run at its highest frequency. However, the BIOS doesn’t allow you to set at 1.65V exactly- it only gives 1.64v and 1.66v. As 1.66V is slightly higher than 1.65V I recommend you to set at 1.64V. This setting is in ‘DRAM Bus Voltage’
  7. Finally, disable ,’CPU Spread Spectrum’ and’PCI E Spread Spectrum’. After this has been done press F10 and then press enter to save these changes done to the BIOS. Now your PC wil be restarted
  8. Once PC has been rebooted, you should run CPU-Z again to make sure that your overclock has been applied- QPI will be reading more than 190MHz now,
  9. Run smallfft test of Prime95 again while checking CPU temperature with CoreTemp. You should see no errors from Prime95 and a CPU temperature below 70 degrees. This step is to make sure that your overclocked PC is stable or not, because an unstable overclocked PC is far more worse than a stable stock-speed PC. Finally you can run Media Benchmark to find how your PC runs.
